FAQ's- What is a Raspberry Pi?
- It is a credit card sized computer board, designed to encourage a new generation of PC users to discover and develop their programming skills. When connected to a monitor/TV and keyboard, with the right programming by the user, it can be used for many things that your traditional PC does. It’s not a simple plug & play PC. It doesn't have Windows or similar packages installed, so isn’t a like-for-like replacement for your normal laptop or desktop PC.
- Who created the Raspberry Pi?
- The concept was created by the Raspberry Pi Foundation, a charity based in Cambridge, UK, and was conceived to encourage and enable children to learn and apply computer programming.
- What is included with my Raspberry Pi?
- Just the Raspberry Pi board is shipped with each order. This allows you to re-use any existing cables, power supplies, keyboards, SD memory cards or monitors you may already have although these are also available to purchase separately or as a bundle from RS Components.
- Where can I buy a power supply / additional items to go with my Raspberry Pi?
- At the time of ordering your Raspberry Pi we will also give you the opportunity to order any necessary accessories you will require to make this product work. Alternatively you can visit the RS website and purchase additional items at a later date.
- Where can I find tutorials and information on how to use my Raspberry Pi board?
- More information and support can be found on the Raspberry Pi homepage at http://www.raspberrypi.org/ and tutorials are available at http://www.youtube.com/user/RaspberryPiTutorials/videos.
- Where do I download the operating system for my Raspberry Pi?
- The image will be available to download from the Raspberry Pi homepage at http://www.raspberrypi.org/
- Can you clarify what is happening with registering interest? Is it first come, first served? When will you be shipping?
- Yes, it's on a first-come, first-served basis, one board per customer, starting from when registration opened at 6am GMT Wednesday 29th February. Each registration has been time-stamped to ensure that the opportunity to buy a Raspberry Pi board is allocated based on the time we received the first request, starting from 6am GMT on Wed 29th February. We are limiting supply of the boards to one per customer.
- I have already registered but received no email. Will I receive an email confirming my registration? If so, when?
- An email confirming successful registration has now been delivered to everyone in our database. If you have not yet received your email confirmation, please check your spam filter to see if it has been placed in there. If you have still not received anything from us then unfortunately your registration has not been successful. Please re-register and enter your details carefully.
- I received an email confirmation, however this was not in the correct language, does this affect my registration?
- Unfortunately we experienced some issues with some of the initial confirmation emails. We believe these issues have now been rectified and therefore should be contacting you in the language of the country you registered in. If the next email you receive from us is incorrect please contact us via email at Electronics.Marketing@rs-components.com
- I incorrectly typed my email address when I registered for a Raspberry Pi and have not yet received an email
- Unfortunately if your email address was typed incorrectly we cannot contact you, and therefore your registration for interest is now invalid. Due to the high demand for this product, we are unable to check or correct customers’ details. Please re-register.
- If I register my interest for Raspberry Pi, will you use my contact details for marketing purposes?
- No. Unless you subsequently choose to sign up to receive marketing materials from us, the only communications you will receive will be to update you on the progress of your registration for a Raspberry Pi board, plus details of supporting hardware and software.
- Do you actually have any Raspberry Pi in stock? And how do we order them? I can only get a Register Your Interest page?
- Along with the other supplier of Raspberry Pi, we are expecting our first shipment of boards in April. Please see latest statement from Raspberry Pi regarding http://www.raspberrypi.org/ . For this reason, we are asking anyone interested in purchasing a Raspberry Pi to register their interest. This will help us to ensure that those who are registered first are given the first opportunity to buy, as we invite people to confirm their request for a board on a first-come, first-serve basis. One Raspberry Pi board will be allocated per order as the stock arrives. At this stage we will collect payment for the board, with the delivery charge and VAT as applicable.
- What is the price for delivery? Can I collect from my local trade counter to save on these costs?
- All Raspberry Pi boards and accessories will be shipped from the UK straight to you. We will not be able to ship them to your local trade counter/depot for collection. All orders are subject to a £4.95 delivery charge to any destination worldwide plus VAT as applicable. This is payable at the time of your order.
- What methods of payment will you accept? When will you take payment?
- We will accept payment via PayPal, Visa or MasterCard credit and debit cards. Any customer ordering with a credit/debit card will be charged in local currency by the bank issuing the card, in accordance with the bank’s exchange rate policy and charges. We will collect payment at the time or order.
- What is compliance testing and why are you doing it?
- Compliance testing is an essential part of bringing any electronic product to market. The Raspberry Pi is being tested to make sure it conforms to all the regulations that apply to electronic devices around the world. This means that we can be sure the Raspberry Pi we deliver to you meets the correct standards and is as safe as you would expect any electronic device you purchase to be. We’re working with the Raspberry Pi Foundation to manage the testing process as quickly as possible, while ensuring all tests are carried out to guarantee safety. Further information can be found at http://www.raspberrypi.org/
- I received an email to confirm I was in the first 1,000 customers, and have entered my delivery address. When can I place an order?
- In conjunction with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, we are currently compliance testing the Raspberry Pi model B boards. Once this compliance testing is complete we will then be in a position to invite you to place your order, and provide you with your delivery dates. RS takes product compliance very seriously and we are working with Raspberry Pi to complete this testing as quickly as possible, however we are not in a position to take any shortcuts on this for your safety.
- Where am I in the queue?
- Due to the unexpected amount of interest for the Raspberry Pi model B boards we are unable to give customers details of where they are in the queue. We will be contacting customers when deliveries arrive, in line with their position in the queue.
